CHICAGO (AP) — U.S. soccer captain Claudio Reyna will miss next month's World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Panama.
The midfielder, who also will skip the May 28 exhibition game against England, told U.S. coach Bruce Arena that he needs the time off to regain fitness. Reyna missed much of the English Premier League season because of a leg injury, U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Michael Kammarman said Wednesday.

Reyna, who plays for Manchester City, couldn't be reached for comment.

The Americans, 2-1 in the final round of qualifying in the North and Central American and Caribbean region, play Costa Rica at Salt Lake City on June 4 and are at Panama on June 8.

Midfielder Eddie Lewis, who plays for Preston North End in the English first division, also will miss the upcoming games following surgery for appendicitis on April 23, Kammarman said.

The status of midfielder DaMarcus Beasley is uncertain. He sprained a ligament in his left knee on April 29 while playing for PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands against FC Twente.
